After all hoo-hah surrounding Azealia Banks co-starring on the cover of Dazed and Confused with a pink condom, we can finally see the offending image for ourselves. It's been banned in seven countries including Singapore, Switzerland and India. Obviously, I won't be taking this to show my Granny but Azealia is a key player in music and culture right now. She's famous for her foul mouth and fearless attitude so why not mark her influence in the appropriate way with a safe sex-centric, cigar allusion, bubblegum blowing metaphor? Or are you of the opinion that condoms are for bathrooms, wallets and male genitalia, not news stands?

Well, at first sight, the visual of this cover may seem gross and could legitimately shock some people, regardless of age but let’s be honest, for decades, major retailers - via some big advertising campaigns - and mags editors use provocation in crossing the barriers of moral decency to reach their goals: to get noticed and to sell as much as possible. For magazines, more the coverage will be trash, most people will be like “mesmerized” and will end to buy them and I'm pretty sure that all theses people aren't perverts, right?! So, stay cool and let’s understand what this photo hides instead (targets, message)...even if the “blows up” makes me fear a deliberate use of vulgarity for free!
ReplyDeleteSurprisingly, I would rather take this magazine cover to illustrate an advertising campaign for condom (and certainly not a campaign against smoking among young people) like "to get a condom is as simple as smoking a cigarette, so protect yourself!" minus the provocative slogan which is useless in this case!
To finish, and even if I don't know what this article on Azealia Banks talks about, I note that 1) pictures & images are often more eloquent than many texts; 2) the visual of this condom is a little too much colorful & inflated such a balloon for this cover to be taken seriously! and 3) her makeup suits her very well! :-D
SO tired of sex as a visual. Just constant selling of sex. It isn't "pushing the envelope" or transgressive or whatever anymore---it's BORING and reductive and in the long long run maybe harmful.
ReplyDeleteI'm not prudish at all, just sick of it. Hasn't done women any favors, actually.
Thanks for sharing the experience.Keep on update your blog.
